Day 303-309
Wow, it's the middle of December already! Only a few days to go to the shortest day too. That always is a good feeling, knowing that the days are getting longer, and we are heading for spring.
We had our usual busy week, and Glenn is now booked in for a swallow assessment. He is eating, and the assessment will allow us to begin with a diet, to see how he manages. I don't know how long it will be before they remove the feeding tube, but we'll know more on Monday. (that is the day of the assessment)
He continues to move more successfully too. His power is returning, it's just hard to get things moving the way he wants. I could go into detail, but it is mostly about going to the bathroom, and I think Glenn would prefer that I not broadcast how that is going! Suffice it to say, we don't use the commode chair anymore, and are making use of a pole in the bathroom to stand and move to take care of business. It is another huge step toward independence, and he is working hard at that, believe me.
We were in for therapy on Thursday, and I forgot to take his feeding bag. What to do? We went to the lab for his blood work, which is located beside a KFC. I thought, and was right, that Glenn could handle the potatoes and gravy in one of their Chicken Bowls. He motored right through it and had a couple of the chicken nuggets too! He couldn't handle the corn, so I scooted it to the side for him. After he was done, he commented on how good that was. I was thrilled he managed it so well. We then went for massage therapy, and they surprised me with a complimentary massage! I guess I looked pretty tense or something. Anyway, I'm still feeling the effects of it, she found a few spots and worked out some major kinks. I think I'll go a bit more often, it should help me too.
Believe it or not, I fixed Glenn a bowl of oatmeal yesterday! (You may or may not know that I really don't like oatmeal... childhood memories!) Anyway, he managed to eat the whole bowl, and I commented that we would have to watch his calories! We are putting his pills into his fruit cups, so are already getting used to eating without the feed tube. I am anxious to have that removed. It is hard to take care of, and you have to watch it like a hawk in case it becomes infected. It always oozes a bit, so we keep it clean as possible. It reminds me a lot of baby belly buttons, and I really hated taking care of them too. All in good time, but I must admit to being impatient more often these days. Time for the holidays I guess.
Speaking of the holidays, I have good intentions of mailing out Christmas cards, so hopefully you'll be receiving one soon. Dale is in the process of moving, and I feel bad that I haven't been of more help to him and Desi, but I only have so much time. I have to find a new place for Glenn's mom too, so that is on my agenda for next week. Whew, how will I ever get done? One bite at a time, I know that, but it becomes quite overwhelming, and I have to remember to prioritize things. Oh well, things work out somehow.
'Til next time,
Louise

What joyful news you are posting these days. It is so good to know that Glenn is improving so well now. We hope that you have a very happy Christmas - I am sure that you did not expect that things would look so bright by now. Hope that Glenn is able to eat a little turkey!
We have been running back and forth for about two weeks on one excursion or another - funny how retired folks have so little time to spare - and we have passed your place a few times, but don't seeem to have the time to drop in. One of these days....
Best wishes for Christmas and the New year, which we hope will bring more joyful news.
Christine and Dean.
Good luck on Monday for the test! Sounds like food is on its way. Good for you both.
Thank you for sparing th toileting detail. You put it very tactfully my friend but my imagination went on a bit. OOOOO....! Add the belly button analogy to that as well.
The massage sounds great. The therapist appears to be of good soul.
Missed you terribly today at the Pughs' get together. Knew it would be very difficult if not impossible and so and so on. But we are coming to see you (me anyway for sure) the end of next week. I'll phone to make sure that it is okay. I won't just drop in and you are to tell me if its convenient for you. Honesty is expected and I won't be hurt. Gavin wants to come too but that may have to be at another time as our timing may not meet up.
After Wednesday the 19th, one more Christmas concert. Hip, hip, hooray! I'll tell you more when I see you.
Everything sounds good there. I hope your plans for Mrs. Mitchell aren't too difficult to put together.
Take care. Love you.

No worries, Louise.. I know how you feel! Sometimes there's just not enough hours in a day. I'm done classes for about three weeks now though, and I have a whole week off for Christmas...I don't even know what I'll do with myself! So if you need any help with searching for a place for Glenn's mom or anything else, don't hesitate to ask! :)
