Day 670 - 690
Christmas is over for another year, and a happy time it was for us. We spent Christmas day at Mom and Dad's, Elaine and Gordon were here, and the kids came later in the evening. There were over 30 in the house that night, and we had a boisterous gift exchange as usual. Glenn was busy cheering on the stealing, but didn't get too much action himself. Colin sat beside him though, and Glenn coached him along. Chelsey got into it and seemed to enjoy the give and take of it. Some people do, some people don't.
To back up a bit, the weather was bitterly cold the last 2 weeks, so I was quite content to be home and not have to go out into it with Glenn too much. We did go out a couple of times, and I was working with 'board man' until I dug out the ski pants I had bought for Glenn last year. That helps to keep his legs warm, although we haven't found a really easy way to get in and out of them. We'll do it a few more times, and eventually will find a method. We did have trouble with the tractor in the cold weather, the fuel line is too exposed, and my brothers think may need to be cleaned. We eventually got it started and the yard pushed, but the weather had warmed up too, which helped.
I'm a little worried that Glenn isn't having enough physio, and may have to find a private clinic in the New Year. The acupuncture helped a lot, but he still needs the stretching and workout of the physio to keep his muscles loose. He is easier and easier to transfer, because he does more of it, and I would hate to lose that mobility. I think he will keep working on it himself, but some expert advise is not a bad thing! I like the homeopathic treatments, and we will do more acupuncture too. Glenn's Mom noticed a big improvement in him because she hasn't seen him that much, so I find that encouraging. He is able to go to bed himself almost all the time, and would like to work on getting up himself. We may need some aids in that department, so I will have to put my thinking cap on and do some research too. He hates having to wait for me to help him up, and since the 'morning person' hasn't changed, I can appreciate that.
Well, that catches up to the present, and now we head toward the wedding in February. Jackie has her dress, and is getting more excited. They had a good time together yesterday, we put Christmas off a day so that they could be together. We had another turkey supper, and then played a few games. It was relaxed and fun, so this may be the way to go. I didn't mind and they certainly didn't. It makes accommodating two families easier, and they don't spend too much time on the road trying to be in two places at once. It did seem weird to not have anyone there after 29 years of kids on Christmas morning, but change happens all the time, and I'm finding it easier to embrace it than fight it.
I did send out a few cards this year, but if you didn't receive one, I would like to wish you a Happy Holiday, and a safe and prosperous New Year.

November 30-December 6
Day 663-669
December is here, and winter has arrived with it. The wind has been blowing out of the northwest, and has a real bite in it. Glenn did his board man imitation when we got home yesterday, but I was expecting it, and got him up the ramp and out of the wind as quickly as I could. I had wrapped his legs with a blanket, but he still stiffened up. It wasn't nearly so scary this time as we have a plan. I should have parked the car at more of an angle to block some of the wind, but that is hard to judge from inside the car!
We did some power shopping with Jackie and Johnny. It was nice to have the extra help in the mall. Chris came too, and took Glenn to his therapy session. This week has been entirely jumbled up as far as scheduling went. The more I tried to accommodate, the more things had to be changed. I finally quit changing things, and went along the best I could. We were in the city everyday but Tuesday though, so I got nothing done at home again. Perhaps next week? (Ha, it is December, and Jackie's wedding is coming up fast, who am I kidding?)
The best news is that Glenn is doing so well. We always have to remember that it should have been so much worse. When you keep that in mind, the impatience that grows is put to rest, and you carry on. Jackie bluntly told someone yesterday that Dad should have died, and I realize that the kids have a real good handle on what happened. Nothing was sugar coated, and in the long run that has served us well. Perspective is hard to keep in all of this, so if you really understand how close it was, you can appreciate the effort by all who have helped us. We are a miraculous story of life, and we do know that.
I'm looking forward to Christmas this year, it will be nice to see everyone, and rejoice as the season unfolds. The dark days will soon start to lengthen, and that in itself is reason to celebrate! We should be able to go to a few more events this year, but of course everything depends on weather conditions. I think the kids are going to help put up the tree tomorrow, that will help set the mood. I will finish piano lessons next week until the New Year too, and that will free my time for a few weeks.

November 26-29
Day 659-662
Where has November gone? Wow, I don't have a chance to get caught up! The botox seems to be helping quite a lot, so we are really going to be diligent about his hand splint. He uses his right hand to push his glasses up now, and I told him to try to reach with it more often too. He pushes on it more when he is getting out of the chair, and generally tries to use it more all the time. We are also trying to be more diligent about walking with the walker too. Slowly it is getting better. His balance has improved, I mainly steady him now, and he can turn a mean corner! He just has to let things become organised before he starts to move, and that makes a big difference.
He bought another laptop computer to help run the power point shows we make. It came without a hard-drive, so he bought one of those too. It will cost about $300.00 when all the pieces get here. For now he is running it with Linux, and it seems to be a very good machine. Theoretically this is for me, but so far I haven't touched it!
Glenn was also able to finish reading a book. He was a bit surprised, I think, but also very relieved. We don't know if the new galsses made the difference, or if it is just time to be able to do it. Probably both. That is one more thing he has back, and now we can let him read in the corner!
Health wise, we are both a bit snuffed up, but so far this hasn't developed into anything more than that. We are still going for acupuncture, but will take a break for Christmas, then decide if we should continue. Perhaps after the wedding, as January will fly by too. No wonder I'm feeling a bit tired!

November 16-25
Day 649-658
I am happy to report that the acupuncture really seems to be helping Glenn's speech, and he admitted last night that he thinks it is helping his arm and leg too. I asked if we should continue, or if he would call it a good try and stop. At first he said he didn't think it was making a difference, then he said that yes, maybe it was. Our friend came to watch the procedure and was fascinated by it. It is amazing to see him stuck with 15 - 20 needles, and he falls asleep! The needles are inserted, then left for 1-1 1/2 hours. We will continue for now, and see where it takes us.
We went out a few times this weekend, (birthdays and the Grey Cup) and Glenn was happy to be out and about. I think the speech improvement has helped him to become less self conscious, and in fact, he told me on Friday that he could have stayed out later. Usually he wants to leave as soon as we are finished eating, so that is a huge change in attitude. I was the one who was tuckered out! Friday was a big day in that we were in Regina from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. We had botox, did the weekly blood work, had an acupuncture treatment, shopped for a tractor, and stayed for supper with the kids for Johnny's birthday. That is impressive when you are not in a wheelchair, so he is definitely getting better! I faded though!
This week should not be so hectic. Glenn got botox to help relax the ring finger on his right hand. It curls up, and sometimes hurts when we straighten it, so he thought it would be good to relax it for a while. I think it is starting to take effect, it is easier to put his hand splint on. We took the power chair in to therapy on Thursday last week to reprogram the drive system. He wants it to move more quickly when he moves the joy stick. It is a bit of a trick to load it myself, but we got there and back without incident, and he is happier with how it responds now.
I don't think I have to do anything over and above therapy and treatments this week, so hopefully I can catch up with house work and have a good go at Christmas shopping. My dryer still needs to be unplugged, so my "to do" list is still not done! C'est la vie!

November 9 - 15
Day 642-648
How do you keep going when it just keeps piling up? Get a bigger shovel I guess! We had water issues, my dryer is still plugged, an appointment went overtime, so I missed a few lessons, and so on and so on... I left yesterday and went to a sewing ladies get together, but poor Glenn just has to be at home those days, and really doesn't catch much of a break. All we can do is our best, and hope for the best.
That sounds a bit forlorn, really it hasn't been bad. The extra trips to Regina take more coordinating, thus the fowl-up with lesson time. I won't do that again though either, so live and learn.
Chelsey and Colin came for a visit one evening, and announced that she had won a trip to the Dominican Republic! She had a good week that week! They will go in January, and Glenn was trying to convince her to take him instead of Colin. She looked a little startled at first, but Colin's remark that the acupuncture has perked up Dad's "smart ass" button, got her laughing.
We got the invitations to wedding 1 pretty well completed, and posted, so that is a huge job done, and the party is on I guess. Jackie is getting into the details now, and is really enjoying most of the shopping. The wedding jitters will hit after Christmas, I think, and it will be interesting to see what sets them off. Hopefully the weather will be mild, that makes life so much easier.
Wedding 2 is in the future, as they have a few major things to finish ( a college major!) and Colin's comment is that they are in no rush. It will be nice to watch that one take shape, as they are both pretty organized, and particular about things they do and don't like. More on that as time goes.
I was commenting to one of my students that the rabbit must be 3 years old, as it is almost 2 since Glenn's stroke. Holy cow, that sort of stopped me. I know I have been counting days, but really how amazing is that? Once you start living again, the time picks up speed, and here we are 2 years down the road. My, it's hard to believe.

October 26-November 8
Day 628-641
I did well posting 4 days apart, now here it is, 2 weeks later, and I finally will post again. I am thankful for my readers, although I would probably still post if no one kept up with us. I had a few people tell me I hadn't posted for a while, and asked what was the problem was, but there is no problem, just busy life distracting us.
October 27 is Christopher's birthday (he turned 28!), and we tried all week to choose a day to have supper or cake or something. Finally, we decided to go Sunday afternoon, at the farm, because it is easier for Glenn and me to be at home. During the week, I finally called to set up and appointment with an acupuncturist . The mail box was full, but she called the next day and left a message. I called back and asked how soon we could see her, and she said to come the next day! That was a surprise, so we were off to the city the next day again. We have had 3 sessions so far, and I can't say I see any huge improvement, but we'll give it a bit more time.
Jackie called Wednesday before Hallowe'en, and said she found a dress, should she buy it? She couldn't get anyone to come and look at it with her, so she went for it anyway. It was on sale, and pretty well what she wanted. It needs a bit of altering, and she has an appointment with a seamstress today, so I think she is happy with it, and quite relieved. She and Johnny came to the farm to work on their invitations, and pretty well finished them on Saturday night. We stuffed the envelopes, but didn't have the correct labels, so didn't get the reply cards or addresses done, but for the most part, they are ready to send.
Sunday rolled around, and I was glad to have them there to help get ready for the birthday party. We cooked and cleaned, and generally puttered to catch up to the house work. I had decided to cook a ham for supper, so everyone could have a ham bun before they left, I felt like I was pretty well on top of things, for a change. Colin phoned from Medicine Hat, where he and Chelsey had attended her cousin's wedding. Little did I know that Colin was planning a big surprise. The afternoon went well, it was a beautiful day, and I was wishing I had bought wieners, we could have had a fire. Around 5:00 , I looked out the kitchen window and noticed a couple going for a walk down to the slough. I thought it was Jackie and Johnny, taking the dogs for a run, but it was actually Colin and Chelsey, who hadn't come into the house to let us know they were home. When they did come in , Johnny noticed they were all flushed and excited, and wondered to Jackie what was up. We soon found out. Jackie and Johnny were hand delivering invitations to the family, and when she handed one to Colin and Chelsey, Colin said, "We'll soon have to do this again!" and held out Chelsey's hand. Yep, there was a big old diamond ring on her left hand, and she was totally delighted to have it there. He had proposed to her down on the rock by the slough (their look out spot I guess) and that was why they were so excited when they came in. Trust Colin to spring such a surprise, and for setting the stage for the announcement too. He was happy everything turned out so well. It turned out that while they were at the wedding, she had caught the bouquet and he had caught the garter! Guess it is meant to be.
Glenn had to rib her and tell her outlaws had to eat on the deck. Johnny said he was glad he had another prospective outlaw to keep company with.
Glenn is working on walking, yesterday we went across the kitchen and back. I didn't do much to keep his upright, but do still have to help his right leg bend at the knee and move his foot forward. That night we were watching a movie, and when the credits came on I noticed they had an animal wrangler. I told Glenn that 's what I feel like, and he said I wasn't a very good one. He sure can keep up the remarks! It keeps me laughing. He transfers himself into the recliner and pretty well handles going to bed. There are more improvements, but not such dramatic ones. This is just getting on with life, and becoming more self sufficient. He likes his glasses, and was helping with the bookwork. We have a new computer, so he is busy transferring data. Yesterday we noticed some data was missing from the farm books, but he hunted most of it down, and now I think I can catch up without too much trouble (famous last words!)
I think that is all the exciting news. I'm working on a few sewing projects to catch up with that, and knitting, because I just can't sit and watch TV that much. Piano lessons are going well, and the extra cash is nice to have to cover things like acupuncture. November is flying by, and I haven't thought much about Christmas shopping. We will handle that as it comes along, just like everything else.

October 22-25
Day 624-627
Don't fall over, I know it's only 4 days, but I feel like posting. We both got our new glasses, and it is nice to see again! Glenn is doing a lot of head bobbing to get used to the bifocals, but I told him that it's good for his neck! We'll see if it helps him read for longer periods. He hasn't actually tried a book, but the papers are easier. He was laughing though, when he is reclined, the TV screen is blurry. I don't know if he will take them off, or if I'll need to give him a pillow to prop up his head. The new lenses in my glasses bring the small print back to my world, so now I can thread that needle again too!
There is no more news, we are getting better. He finds he can move his right foot on the lino better than the carpet, so we practice walking in the kitchen. I think we'll try the hallway, that's a bit more traveling, so he should get stronger. I don't know if we'll fit, I stand beside him, and that could be too cosy in the hall. I also need to keep the chair close behind him in case we lose our balance, so all in all it is a bit of a trick. We'll figure something out though.
The kids went to Melville to watch a snow blower at an auction sale today. It would help us keep the yard clear, I hope they get it. They've never bid before, so I hope they don't get confused. They also have a limit. It's not a very nice day either, but the weather may be different up there. We'll see later today.

October 12-21
Day 613-623
It's raining today, so no field work for a few days again. The boys are not able to get the breaking disked, and I don't know if the piles would burn now after the wet snow and rain. You'd have to use a lot of fire starter! The snow did disappear, and some combining was done this week. Everyone is disheartened by the dropping prices. All that work and nothing to show for it again.
Glenn is not using his thickener anymore. Even water is going down without too much trouble. He still chokes on it when he gets to the bottom of the cup, but for the most part it is OK. He had trouble with some salad the other night, so we are not out of the woods yet, but not much is holding him back from all foods. That sure makes preparing meals nicer. He is doing well without his medicine, and I think is actually feeling better without it. He is speaking in longer, more conversational phrases, and we do fairly well. More people are understanding him, but he doesn't have a lot of volume yet, so it is almost impossible to talk with him in a crowd. That will come too.
He decided to stand up at the sink to wash his hands and face the other day. I asked him if he had been doing that very long, and he just said that was the first time. He is pushing things like that now, and I'm happy about it. I think we're going to make it!

Otcober 7-11
Day 608 - 612
It's been an eventful week and I'm feeling the effects of it a bit today. Nothing I haven't felt before, but tired never the less. We went to the doctor on Tuesday, and he discontinued a medication that has pretty serious side effects, so we'll see how that plays out in the next few weeks. This particular one interacts unfavorably with warfarin, so I expect that will show up in the INR (blood test) some time in the next week or two. I'm just as happy to not use it anymore, and the doctor said he rarely prescribes it himself, as it is at best 50% ineffective. That's pretty high. We got a good spot to park, (this doctor is in the Medical Office wing of the General Hospital) so that made life a bit easier. We did have to drive around a bit before we got this spot, so I was happy it opened up. We had to pick up some thickener while we were there, so I gave Glenn a tour of the hospital. He may have done some of it for his Mom, but probably not the food services part in the basement. Next day we went to the optometrist, and we are both getting new prescriptions and new glasses. I took Dad and he got a prescription too, although he didn't buy his glasses at the office. I think he may go to Costco to do a bit of price comparison. He has cataracts starting, and is showing early signs of Macular Degeneration. The doctor prescribed a multi-vitamin to help fight the effects of the degeneration, but he needs to go back yearly to watch how it progresses. We had picked Mom and Dad up and were driving them around for the day. That day was Ken's 60th birthday, so we met Ken and Sandra for lunch, and Bill and Ida Mae were there too. It was good to be with them all, and Mom picked up the tab. I guess you don't ever stop paying for your kids meals out!
Thursday was our regular therapy day, and I had planned on just going for that and coming home to catch up on some house chores, but the phone rang Wednesday evening, and it was Glenn's Auntie from Vancouver. She and her daughter were in Regina, on their way to Russell, Manitoba. Auntie's sister had passed away, and they are going to her viewing and funeral. Did we have time to meet them for lunch? Well of course we did, so after therapy, we had lunch. It was good to see them, and Glenn was happy to visit with his cousin for a bit. We'll try to see them again before they leave.
So now I was looking forward to a day off on Friday, but you guessed it, the phone rang. Could I come in to work on Friday? Well, I did, so the laundry had to wait until last night. My clothes are still draped around the house, because I didn't get a chance to look under the dryer and see if the fan is plugged up. The clothes get warm, but no air seems to be flowing, so I just have warm damp clothes after 40 minutes in the dryer. What next?
I'm at the store for my regualr shift, my clothes are clean and mostly dry, and we are going for turkey supper and birthday cake tomorrow. I guess I'll take Monday off! Glenn is just happily going from one appointment to the next, and shows no sympathy when I moan about how busy we were this week. What can I say?

September 28-October 6
Day 599-607
I was going to post on Saturday, but was busy enough at work to forget to do it. It is Monday, and I'm at work again, because we have various doctors appointments this week, and I was able to come in for a while today. I can't stay the whole day today, but it rained, so I should be able to leave early. Piano lessons are going well, although Glenn would like a TV working in the office, so I'll get the boys to work on that. We'll have to string an antennae wire to the office, probably through the attic, and I won't do that.
Glenn is doing well. His outlook is improving, and the other day while we were standing with the aid of the walker, I asked him if he thought he would walk again, and he teared up and said yes he does. That is a huge change on his part, because even this spring he was saying he didn't think he would leave the chair. The hope is now there, and the drive is returning. I'm thrilled, because there is only so much I can do, then he has to pick it up and go. That will happen now. Helen had him standing on his own in the walker, and I was brave enough to let him go too. His balance is improving, his posture is better, and he wants to go. What more can I say?
We have a few doctors appointments, and I hope to take my dad to the optometrist on Wednesday. Glenn and I both need new glasses, so I made an appointment for Dad too. I hope he comes with us. We are all concerned about his vision, but he is reluctant to go.
We went out for 'harvest is over' supper last night, and Chris picked up Shirley and brought her along. She is doing much better at her new home, and was saying that they have good cooks there. It is much easier knowing that she is well cared for now. Uncle Bob is back from the hospital, but I haven't gotten an update on his condition for a few days. Hopefully he has cleared up, but pneumonia is hard to shake when you don't move around a whole lot. Rose is visiting him regularly, and she herself is doing well after her heart surgery. It has been an eventful summer for them.
We are settling in and trying to get ready for winter. My car has mice in it, so I'm not sure what to do or where to take it to get them cleaned out. I'll do a bit of phoning this week and try to get them out, the heater will be working now, and they do smell!

September 21-27
Day592-598
The crop is in the bin at our farm, and the weather is holding for other farmers to get done. The wind is nippy today, so I'm glad I'm not out there. It was a busy week as the custom combiners were out and about in the yard all week. They finished Thursday night, because the forecast was for rain on Friday. As it happened, it didn't rain, but the barley is off the fields now, so that is OK. They were up late and so was Louise. Jackie, Johnnie , Glenn and I planned to go to Yorkton on Friday, so I was relieved to have the combiners wrap up and leave before we did. We accomplished a lot in Yorkton, and played Glenn right out, but that is the way it is right now. I'm recuperating at the co-op, and it isn't too busy. We chose the bridesmaid dresses and Halleluah, I found a dress too! Then we went to another shop and I found shoes (on sale, too) so I'm ready to go! That was an unexpected bonus. We went to Yorkton, because I liked the dresses that Chris and Aryn chose from that same shop. They are very well made, and are reasonably priced. Johnnie came in with us, and while Jackie was looking at one dress ( in brown) and was asking if it came in black or red, Johnnie spotted a little black one, and showed it to Jackie. She tried it on, and was sold. It comes with a choice of sash colour, so I think it will be the one. We also went to a shop called Plum Tree, and found some nice decorations. We had also stopped at a farm that is having an auction sale on October 25 to look at a snow blower, so we had a packed trip.
Glenn goes for botox again on Monday, and to an internalist on October 7. We also have to go to the optomitrist soon, although I haven't booked that yet. He has a bit of a time finding a good distance to see things, and I tease him about playing trombone. We have avoided any really bad 'flus or colds so far, and hopefully we will have a bit more of a repreive. I have kids coming in every day now, so it is just a matter of time.
We are getting more excited about the wedding now that we have bought a few more things for it. There are fowl suppers coming up in the next month or so, so I'll try to contribute as I can. Glenn is more and more interested in the work around the yard, although that usually means I get a bit more to do as well. I would rather he be thinking about fixing than just sitting in front of the TV. Hopefully he can do more next year!

September 13-20
Day 584-591
Our fields are all swathed now, and the boys hope to have a good go at the combining this weekend. They worked until 10:30 or so last night, and if the clouds hold off, they should have a good day today. It is a bit unusual to be away from the action, but I'll live! I have called the custom combiners, and they may show up today too. If they do, they will get done tomorrow. That will be a relief for all of us, although the boys were convinced they could do it. I'm sure they can, but the weather scared me enough to call for help.
The weeks are flying by now, we are picking up the things in life that keep a person involved and busy. The piano lessons went well this week, and I think we'll be able to manage them. I have quite a few students, so that will keep me on track a bit more, barring any more mishaps with Glenn and the Lawn mower. He got too close to a tree last week and scraped his face and neck. He came from Colin's yard, and his glasses were gone, and so was his hat. I said he had to show me where they were, and they were under the apple tree. I guess we should trim some of the lower branches so we can cut up to the trunk. Otherwise, Glenn is slowly making head way. He went across the living room with me and the walker yesterday. I hadn't planned on walking with him without someone else for a while, but Glenn has other ideas. It is rather amazing how much difference it makes to do a bit more on his feet. His posture is better, his balance is better, and he does more stretches when he is on his feet. He tried to take a pulley off the straight header yesterday, but didn't have the power to loosen the nuts from the chair. He does try hard though. I'm going to find him on the ground or floor a few more times, but he is more careful about trying things without someone around.
My mammogram went OK, and I'm waiting for the results. I also went for lunch with friends that day, so we are getting around to other stuff. October is coming, and that means a trip to the card department for birthday and anniversary cards. The year is coming to a close so fast it is scary. Jackie is counting days to her wedding and told me on Wednesday that there are only 143 days to go! Oh my, I do have to get a few things done before then.
Glenn's uncle Bob was sent to the hospital with flu like symptoms last week and I haven't heard any more about what was going on. I'll have to phone and see how he is doing. I do feel bad I can't go to see him more often, but it seems to be a bit more than I can handle right now. Maybe next year we will be getting around more.

August 18 - Sept 12
Day 558-583
Whew! I thought I had lost my contact with the blogging world. I needed to open a Google account, and something happened. I have been trying to figure it out for a few days now, so finally I tried a different approach, and here I am!
We have been busy. Glenn is working on his balancing with the walker, and I have been trying to do my "to do " list. Happily, the lentils are gone, the deck is painted, and the swather is in the field even as I write this. I hope the rain stays away for a while so everyone can get finished. It is always a relief to have it in the bin.
I decided to start teaching piano again, and have scheduled lessons to start next week. We'll see how that goes soon. I have a few misgivings, but hope to do well once I get started.
Jackie is starting to get more excited. She is planning to have her dress made, as she just didn't find one that she dreamed about, and we both decided we don't have time to go far on shopping trips. It may work out about the same anyway, and save us the time and gas to travel and shop. Most plans are in place, and they will print the invitations soon. That really brings home how close it is.
Glenn is scheduled for Botox review on September 29, I'm having a mammogram on the 17th, and I have to make eye appointments, as both Glenn and I are finding our arms are too short! Life begins at 50 hey? Life on the road to the doctors I guess!
Sorry about the long period of no news, I'm probably forgetting about a lot of things that happened at the end of August, but I may remember next time I post.

August 6-17
Day 546-557
31 years of marriage are behind us, and who can know where we will go from here? This journey was totally unexpected, but it is not for us to know, otherwise we'd just go hide in a corner somewhere and avoid life as much as possible. OK that was pretty philosophical, so let's get on with it!
We continue to practise dressing and Glenn completely dressed himself last week. It was in the afternoon, and he had just had a shower. He was pretty limber, and when I got back to help him, he was done! Yeah! He will do more now, although it is hard to do it all in the morning.
We had a bit of disappointment in that our PT wasn't too sure that she was in favour of a walker, but I think I'm going to go ahead and get one, and start working it anyway. She wants Glenn to be safe, and of course I do too. I can't help but feel that he needs to be on his feet more. Walking is a good exercise, so lets do more of it! I think Glenn was a bit disappointed too, so I asked him what he thought, was he willing to use the chair to get around, and he said he wants to have a good try to walk. Enough said, we will see what we can figure out.
We have gone visiting a bit, and have gone up some stairs. Out hosts are always willing to help, and once they see what we are trying to do, (Glenn takes the stairs on his feet, but needs help, of course), they are most anxious to help. I need to let people help, I forget that Glenn needs more interaction that just me. It is a test of trust, and letting go is a hard thing, but it will be better for us in the long run.
I wrote out a "to do " list today, and it is LONG! I hope to get a good start this week. Some things are just a matter of phoning and making arrangements, but that takes time, and you have to remember to do it. Good intentions and all that! I did sew a blanket for a new baby that arrived in the neighbourhood. It is very cuddly, and I was happy to be able to concentrate on it for the day. I washed the back deck today, and hopefully will be able to paint it later this week. Glenn was working on the pickup on the combine, so I had to go help him with a few things. It is amazing to see how well he does even at that. He comes in and needs to wash up! The ability to turn nuts the right way first time still gives me pause, but Glenn just does it. I admire that! The mosquitoes chased us in, but we had a look at the flat tire on the swather before we came in. That will be a bit more than I can handle.
I haven't figured out how to use facebook yet, but I seem to have a lot of friends! When I have a bit more time, I'll concentrate on it. Until then I'll just look at other peoples entries.
I have run out of news and information. It is Sunday evening, and I guess I'm a bit tired too. I think I'll go see if Canada won any medals today. Go Canada!
'Til next time,
Louise

Go Canada!

July 23-August 5
Day 532-545
We've been on our road trip to Nipawin, and all in all did very well. I got sick the day we left, mostly from nerves I think, but was OK the next day for the wedding. The wedding was very nice, and my sister was very tired, but happy with the way things went. We had a bit of trouble with hardware for the power point, but got everything figured out, and it went well.
Glenn traveled well. We reclined the seat to relieve pressure on his butt, and he was able to snooze a bit. I was more uptight, trying to remember everything, but now that we have done it, we'll not stress so much about going again. We came home Monday, and the kids stayed and camped, so everything worked out.
Since then it seems we've done not much more than yard work. Glenn has been cutting grass, and we dug the combine out yesterday. I have some men coming to do a service call on Friday, so we took advantage of a couple of boys on holidays to do some work too. It shouldn't need too much done to it, but it is good to check it out before you start harvest, when you have the time.
I've been encouraging Glenn to dress and undress more on his own. It takes a bit more time, but he gets most of it done. Shoes and socks are still the biggest problem. He is getting a bit restless, and needs something to fill his time. I got him reading a book, and he is surprised that it is easier now. I think that he couldn't track very well for what ever reason, and now that is not much of a problem . If he can start reading more books, that will fill some time. He was pushing to get the combine out, so the farmer is still there. I'm feeling the strain of climbing in and out of the machines. Boy, take a year off and what does it get you? Sore muscles when you do start working! The summer is flying by, we celebrated Dad's 81st birthday yesterday. He is feeling very well, and enjoyed the family around. He is thankful for his continuing good health, and so are we.
That's about all for now, we'll keep getting stronger I hope.

July 13 - 22
Day 522 - 531
It has rained over an inch last week, and the crops around here are really coming along nicely. Dale went and picked a few heads from our barley, and if it fills, we should harvest a good crop. I'm not sure about doing this again next year, I have some time left to decide. The prices are going nuts, and really, the boys don't need the extra work.
Glenn has been plagued with a sore back the last few days. It seems to come and go. Today he was OK, but transfers yesterday were hard. He is working on the computer, and is trying to stretch more to get it back into shape. Hopefully he won't suffer on the trip to Nipawin. We'll have to be sure to carry pillows, and stop to stretch whenever he feels the need. Our power point came together quite nicely, he is working on the music track today. We ordered a projector, and it came today, so that was a relief. Now we just need to nail down the sound system and we are away.
Everyone is getting ready to pack for the weekend. Wendy planned to leave today, she wanted to attend the community shower in White Fox. The weather here looks a little iffy, but that is a whole different world there. The wedding is indoors anyway, but hot and muggy is never too much fun!
Jackie and Johnny decided to lease a new Pontiac Vibe, so they are excited to be able to drive a new vehicle. It should work out well for them, but time will tell. It should be dependable, anyway. They are planning to camp next week, as well as Chris and Aryn. Colin and Chelsey are going to Edmonton, then going back to camp, so they will be clocking a few miles. It was interesting digging out the camping gear, and finding out what was still good. The tent needed airing, but was in good shape otherwise.
I'm blabbing on here, but it is nice to not be under the gun so much right now. Glenn is puttering around in the shop more, and does more for himself all the time. We have cut back some medications, and don't miss the feeding tube at all. Slowly but steadily things are returning. He is easier to understand, especially on the phone. We went to visit his Mom last Monday, and she is happy where she is. I'm catching up on a few things, but more is added to the list, so I'm not gaining. That is also a normal thing though.
Thanks for reading, I know quite a few people still do. Keep us in your prayers too. It all helps, no doubt about it.

July 5 - 12
Day 514-521
As requested, this week was much more uneventful. Glenn's bruises have faded, and he is greatly scolded by every one about his adventure. He wasn't being reckless, he miscalculated the stability of the mower. Thank goodness he didn't get more seriously hurt. He has cut more grass in the bin yard since then, and did fine. I need a fair bit of courage to have him do these things, but of course he needs to, and is perfectly capable of making those decisions.
We need to work out more, he is showing signs of stiffening up a bit, although some of that was from the accident. The botox in his hand seems to be working, his fingers are more loose. The OT was pleased with how he could open his hand and stretch out his arm, so that is good. He was standing at the sink the other day, and was doing some exercises when he called me. He could touch his right hand to his chin, something that he couldn't do before, so there is still progress. I'm thinking of getting a walker for him, he could start to move around the house a bit, although I will probably have to hide it when I'm gone! I think if he starts to do that, he will get stronger faster. I will have a professional helping with this, I'm not making any rash decisions!
Jackie and I went shopping for wedding stuff yesterday, and she got a bit more excited about it. It became more than just a day in the future. We bought some decorations, and actually found some nice invitation kits. She is thinking about how this will work and seems a bit fixated on the guest favours. Funny how some things bug you more than others. She is pleased with her work so far, and so is the dentist she is working for. We are looking forward to a family wedding in a few weeks, she will be looking at how things are done a bit more closely!
That about covers it for this week. Our nerves have settled, and we are coasting a bit right now. We're working on a power point, and are crafting a few gifts, so I've enjoyed this week. My garden is coming along, and we are beating the weeds back pretty well. Jackie has been out to help with it a few times, and is looking forward to fresh potatoes!

June 22-July 4
Day 501-513
I had a hard time settling into writing this as we had a traumatic week. Last week we had botox injections, and since the Dr. was helpful, I asked a few other questions. Glenn's back was giving him trouble, so I asked about additional painkillers. ( I never got an answer to the painkiller question!) Dr. looked at Glenn's meds, then told us we could start eliminating the use of some of them. We are weaning him from some water pills, and will go to see the cardiologist about the amiodarine, as it doesn't seem to be helping the arythmia. I then asked about the feed tube. and what procedure we needed to follow to have it removed. He asked a few more questions about how Glenn was coping without using it. I told him we hadn't used it in over 2 months, and he said OK, let's pull it out, and he did just that. It kind of popped as it came out, but it is gone! That was unexpected. We needed to cover it and keep it clean for the time it needed to heal, but it looks quite well.
Monday came along and we received news of a young man who had passed away on the weekend. I was upset for the family, and Glenn decided to mow some grass before it got too hot. I helped him get on, then went to the garden. In a while the mower stopped, so I went to see what was wrong. As I got close to where I thought he was working, a car stopped on the highway, and I could hear someone calling Glenn, and asking him if he was alright. My heart dropped into limbo and I raced over there. There he was, upside down in the ditch. Thank God he was moving, but as I got a closer look, I really didn't like how he was folded under the machine. The neighbour lady helped me unhook the seat belt, and we pushed the mower back onto its wheels, and got a good look at Glenn. He had a bit of blood on his face, but did what he was asked and could move all his limbs. The neighbour called her husband, and the guys came and helped lift Glenn back into his chair. He had no pain, and the bleeding seemed to be stopping. I thanked our helpers, and got Glenn into the house so I could have a good look at him. He was saying that now he had a story to tell. When he was on the ground, he looked under the chair and took a label out that he hadn't seen before. I asked him when he had looked at the bottom of the chair before. He also landed on an ant pile, so he had ants in his pants too! The damage seemed to be superficial, but I called a friend to come and give her opinion, and she said the same thing. He could move his hand, although it is sporting a huge bruise. His face took to worst of it, his glass nose piece jammed into the side of his nose, and he looks as though he went a round with Mike Tyson. Today the bruises are starting to yellow around the edges, so he will get pretty colourful in the next few days. I helped him put on his glasses this morning, but put a bit of padding under the one nose piece (amazingly the glasses were only slightly bent!) I think I suffered more from the shock than he did, but he knew how much it hurt. I gave him sh-- about cutting the ditch, and he commented that he didn't think that would happen. Needless to say, he won't do them any more. I went to the shop last night to see if the mower would start and run. It did both, although there was a great cloud of smoke as the oil burned out of the engine. It seems none the worse for wear, and I cut a bit of grass to see if it would keep going. It did, so we were lucky this time. I told Glenn his angel is still watching over him closely, but he should give him a break. I'm at work today and tomorrow, so Glenn is on his own. Jackie thought she might come out this afternoon, as she only worked to 12:30. I haven't heard from them, so I'll find out when I get get home. It took most of Tuesday to settle down, and the therapists were concerned yesterday, but everyone agreed that he looks the worse for wear, but really didn't do too much damage. I hope we have an uneventful week next week!

Day 497-500
Hey, our girl is now a dental assistant. She starts work on Monday. We went to the Conexus Centre yesterday to see her cap and gown ceremony. I picked up my Mom and Dad and took them with us for the event. It went well, except for a bit of bathroom stuff, but that was a difference of opinion more than anything. We are handling more outings, and Glenn is being a real trooper about going out and about. He is still hard to understand, but is getting better and less self-conscience about it. How could he not be there for his girl? Jackie had requested the wheel chair seats, so they were reserved for us and an usher took us straight up to them. That helped a lot. Grandma didn't have to climb a bunch of stairs, nor did Johnnie's Mom (she has a very bad back injury), so everything went well. That is another milestone on this journey of ours.
Glenn and I had a bit of a shouting match over cutting the ditches, but I told him he couldn't until after the seat I ordered came in. The seat has a higher back and side rests, so I should be able to strap him on more securely. He had a bit of trouble with his balance and I had to rescue him a few times, as he was listing to the side and unable to let go of the steering wheel to stop the mower. I have to be careful not to get my toes run over, so hence the shouting match. It felt kind of good, and was a normal thing between us. I haven't had to do that in a long time! Nor has he had to need to shout back. That always relieves tension!
We are going to the botox clinic next Friday again. We didn't get a notice before Wednesday last week, so it was a bit of a surprise. The letter is probably floating around Canada Post. We think he will only get a bit in his hand to help relax his fingers. The hamstring shots didn't help much last time, so that therapist thought we shouldn't bother again. He is compensating and figuring out how to move on that leg anyway, so maybe letting the body take care of itself is the way to go here .
(I hear a few snickers about the shouting match and need to explain that it is PMS time too!)
The boys still need to spray, and took Glenn for a scouting tour the other day. I bought the chemical, so it just needs to happen now. Then we can relax and hope for the best. I'll have to call the combine guys to come and do a bit of work on the combine so it will be ready to go. I had to get the crop reports done and sent, so it has been a busy week. We've finally got the go ahead on the individualized funding, so had an assessment done, and filled out a bunch more forms. My we use paper! It will be nice to get a bit of money for Helen, she is great!
That is about all for now, I need to write more often as there are a lot of things going on right now. Oh, remember my washing machine trouble? Turned out to be three loose/missing bolts in the tub, so the guy fixed it, and charged me $50.00 for shop fees. What a relief! We hooked it back up (again with a bit of growling on my part) and I was able to wash my clothes again. What next do you suppose?

June 11-17
Day 490-496
We had 3 2/10 inches of rain last week, and boy what a difference in the way things look. The crops are springing up (along with the weeds) and everything looks so green. We will need to spray soon, I think Glenn wants to be along for the scouting trip. He told me yesterday that he could drive the 1/2 ton, because he could open the door to look at the weeds. I don't know if I'll be the one that goes with him for that!
We went to Swift Current on the weekend, and did very well. We remembered everything we needed, and discovered Glenn's suit is a bit snug. He needs to tighten up his belly a bit again. The ride there went well, Dale drove with us, the Rav handled both chairs and three people and luggage, so I'm happy with it. We should do well going to Nipawin in July.
Glenn was cutting grass again yesterday, and is now thinking of more things he can try to do. I told him that the more he tries to do, the more work I have to do! That is OK, but I really didn't think of that as a possibility.
Jackie graduates this week, and last night she phoned and told me she starts work on Monday. that is a good thing to be able to finish school one week and start work the Monday after! she is a very happy girl right now. Today the dentist will work out her wage scale and benefits, and she should be on her way.
Glenn took the steps at Mom's house on Sunday night. It was our first attempt at walking up stairs. Wendy helped hold him steady, and I helped work his feet a bit. He did well, and now we are a step further to independence. It is amazing to see him take on these challenges. He has more courage than I do, but he knows what is going on, and I can only help out.

June 2-10
Day 481-489
We had another nice rain on the weekend, so that should get things started well, especially the weeds! We are thinking about what to take to the wedding on Saturday, and the list is getting longer. I just have to start packing, and as I go I should remember the important stuff. Glenn needs a haircut, but other than that he is good to go. It will be interesting to see how we do.
He is getting stronger, and we are getting smarter about a lot of things and how to go about doing them. Yesterday I had to take my washing machine to the hospital, (yes, it finally gave out!), so we had to see if Glenn could get into the 1/2 ton. Last time we tried, he was too unsteady to be able to get there, and the boys weren't around to boost him in, so we tried using the stool again. He got his left foot on the stool, I helped him stand on it, and got his right foot onto the stool. From there he just had to turn around a bit and get onto the seat and we were away. He couldn't do that last fall, so he has come along quite well. He just giggles when we overcome these obstacles, and it actually went well, no scary parts at all. Off we went, and I will probably hear today or tomorrow if the poor machine is dead or not.
Chris also hauled the Sunbird into the city to have his neighbour go over it and tell us what it needs. It will cost too much, so I told him to get rid of it. We'll take some money and it will be out of the yard. It is a mechanics special, so we don't have the time to fix it ourselves, and really we don't need it anyway. Now we just have to get Dale's Buick out of the yard and we should be OK for the rest of the summer. We could work on Bluey (the '89 Camry) but the way things are going I'm not going to hold my breath. It probably is the most reliable car, worth some money, but again, we don't need it right now. Colin bought another Suzuki Swift, and is waiting for a settlement from SGI to license it. The cars that have come and gone the last few years is a bit mind boggling.
Back to Glenn... we should phone the doctor to have a surgeon remove his feed tube. He hasn't used it in over a month, and seems to be adjusted to real food. We had a bit of trouble with some BM's, but that has since resolved itself, and we are eating a normal diet. He can drink as much as he needs, and takes his meds by mouth, so I think we are away. He cut grass again last night, and will do more tomorrow (if it isn't raining.) The mower is good for him to drive, although he is hunched over. I hope his posture improves over the course of the summer. He has to think about sitting up straight, and really is balanced because he is holding on to the steering wheel. We have a pretty good system of getting him on the thing, although it can be scary getting his leg over the steering wheel.
I think that is about all I have to say for now, we are looking forward to the weddings, Jackie's cap and gown is on the 20th, and we have to work on a Powerpoint presentation for our niece's wedding in July, so our agenda is full. Of course the boys will have to spray sometime soon, but we haven't scouted yet, so that won't be for a bit.
Happy Fathers Day to all the Dad's out there, take the day and enjoy yourselves and your families.

May 21 - June 1
Day 469 - 480
We are finished seeding, and actually received 1/2" of rain to get it off to a good start. The boys did well, and now we are waiting to see what else will come up with the crop. It is a fair bit different than a few years ago, but what else is new? Every day is new and different for us now, and we need to get on with life.
Glenn has been getting on his feet more, and people going by on the highway see him standing on the deck. He goes for a bit of a stroll and is getting better at that too. The more he does, the better. Jackie took a few pointers from Helen regarding stretching his arm and leg, so more of us know what to do for him. Jackie came and started putting in the garden yesterday, and I'll work on it this week. It doesn't look too bad, considering what we started with. (Oh, Johnny helped too, and really doesn't like to garden. Dale figures it's the Y chromosome!)
Now we are looking forward to a wedding on the 14th in Swift Current. We have a room booked, so it will be our first sleep over since Glenn came home. I think it will be OK, and we will deal with what ever comes up as we go along. I have never been a strict keeper of schedules, and that should help. I just can't predict what may need to be taken care of, so strict schedules are out of the question. Day by day is the rule of thumb here now.
Glenn has been on the lawn mower twice now, and has done a good job. I need to be available in case of trouble, but so far so good. I have a belt that I used to strap him to the seat, and as long as he stays out of the trees and rock patches he does well. He over did it a bit the other day, and could hardly sit up any more, but I put him in the shower, and he revived quite well. His physio just shakes her head at us, and says he is quite different from the old guys she works with. No joke, he isn't that old, and is in his right mind, so he is as careful as anyone with himself, and knows what he shouldn't do, although he is a bit impatient at times, and won't wait for help. Oh well, some things don't change!
Jackie's Grad is coming up, and she is lined up to start working as soon as she is finished her board exams. She is looking forward to receiving her own paycheck again, and plans for the wedding will start to pick up too. We shopped for a dress a couple of weeks ago, so that really got her interested. It was fun.
We are still in need of a good soaking rain. Last night the kids planned to have a fire, and Dale and Johnny worked at getting in some wood. All was well until we started to cook wieners. A cloud blew up and spit on us on and off for over an hour. The kids perseverred, and actually had a nice night. Glenn and I bailed at around 9:30, but we're old after all, and really don't need to get damp around a fire anymore!
Fathers Day is coming up, so I wish you all a good day. I may actually post again before then, but I have been slow the last couple of months, so I thought I would send best wishes out now. A lot of people are still following my thoughts and reports online, and I am rather impressed with the dedication shown. I assure you that I do this as a way of putting into words the events that are important or at least memorable to me as Glenn continues to recover. Some days I really see great improvements, and somedays I don't. Some days I am impatient and a bit grumpy about all of this, but for the most part, I am OK. Glenn is not hard to be with most of the time, and really works hard at getting on his feet and back into life. We can't and don't dwell on whythis happened to him. It did and we have to cope. The kids talk about it more, and have a good handle on it, and help whenever they can. The doctor told Glenn that his will to get better will drive his recovery now, so he's in the driver's seat! Spring has helped everyone's outlook, and the farmers prayer for rain is again on our lips.
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes, they help. We are aware and grateful for your interest, and welcome your comments.

May 8-20
Day 455-468
The irony of life shows up once in a while to keep everyone humble, I think. Last Saturday the boys were out to farm, and they were brave enough to let their Dad drive the car. Now how about that? I wouldn't have done that yet, but they were willing to have a go, and said they were brave enough. That was how I felt about teaching the kids to drive!
We are putting seeds in the ground and running into the usual break downs, and glitches, but all in all, it is going quite well. The weather is always a factor, and some inexperience is slowing up the procedure, but it is OK. On Friday I was helping Chris load the seeder, and his comment was that it felt good to be doing it, he missed farming last year. I was worried that Glenn would feel frustrated about not being able to get in and do it, but he is OK with being the consultant for now. He is getting tanned, and I see him standing up at the implements to see what is going on. We had a head scratching session on Sunday with Dale. He was going to spray, and it gave trouble. We couldn't figure out what was wrong. We cleaned the filter, and he said it was full of minnows. Hmmm.... that's not right. The pond filter had a hole in the bottom, and sucked a bunch in. He cleaned that out, but still couldn't get the right pressure to spray. What the heck... I took Glenn out to the field, and we scratched our heads, opened and closed valves, cleaned the filter again, and still nothing. Finally, Glenn says, "Bring me a nozzle." We had the wrong size nozzle up, so we changed them and away Dale went. Man, what a day!
Jackie and Johnny came on Sunday too, and helped clear the garden. I don't know how it will go, but we needed to beat back some of the weeds anyway. My new weed whacker couldn't handle the bigger stuff, so Johnny grabbed my old scythe, and proceeded to clear it out. I couldn't believe he would actually know how to use it, and the second thing was that the scythe would actually still cut anything. Anyway, they got through the jungle, and I got the lawn mower started and hooked up to the yard sprayer. We got it sprayed and will have it tilled on the weekend. Then we can decide if it is in shape for gardening or if we should just summerfallow this year. It was a busy weekend.
People are happy to hear that Glenn is so interested in the happenings on the farm. He is still pretty limited, but man, I can see him making tremendous effort, and it is good for his head to think about all the stuff the boys are asking him about. I have a hard time remembering to get him to exercise, but he gets a workout anyway. His speech is getting better, but he needs to speak slowly, and when he has something to say he just goes. Unfortunately, we usually have to get him to start again, but that is happening less often too. Some of that also depends on how tired you are when he starts talking. The more tired I am, the less I can understand him the first time. We are also not using the feeding tube any more. I don't know when the doctor will take it out, but he is doing well without the supplement. He is still a bit slow when he eats, and when there are distractions he has more trouble, but if it's just us, he almost keeps up to me.
We took Shirley out for supper on her birthday, and Glenn had a veal cutlet meal. He pretty well cleaned his plate. I would really like to get him out more now, so when seeding is over, we will probably go to visit people more.
Well, I'm sure I've forgotten something, but am at work, so I really should go.

April 30-May 7
Day 446-454
The weather has been nicer, but it's still cool. The trees are starting to bud, and the birds are back. We were out today and Glenn was almost napping in the sun. He has to be careful of that as some of his meds are sensitive to sunlight, but he is getting brown anyway. The ammonia tank arrived today, so I think we are ready to roll. Glenn had me up and down the other day checking the sprayer. I thought I was just going to wash the tank, but he came along to supervise, and pretty soon we are draining the lines, checking the ball valves, and priming the pump to fill the booms. The nozzles were pretty well clear, but I had to clean out a few of them. I think it is ready for the boys to use now, and all I was going to do to help was wash the tank! I learn more every day! I must admit I felt the workout, the tractor isn't the easiest thing to hop in and out of!
We did this on Monday. We don't have therapy on Monday anymore, so thought we had better do some kind of work out to keep up. Glenn used the sprayer to stand, and he was busy inspecting the thing, looking for problems. It is good for his brain I think. We will work out more diligently now, and Helen made some suggestions to help Glenn be more steady on his feet. I think now that the more he just stands, the better. He can't work on his balance if he is sitting in the chair. He was talking about trying to drive the lawn mower, so we have more workouts to come. We must remember safety too, so I will probably earn a few more gray hair before the summer is over. Oh well, I liked the optimism, and gosh, someone else cutting grass is just too good to be true!
May is another month full of family birthdays. We even double up on a couple of days. Well, if you guys are still reading Auntie's blog, Happy Birthday to Patricia, Elaine, Darcy and Curtis (on the 9th ), Wendy and Darren (on the 15th ) and John. I'm not sure I'll get to parties, but I do try to remember everyone!
Another day for family is coming up on Sunday, so Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms reading this. Being a Mom is one of the hardest things you will ever do, but it is also the most rewarding and fun. Enjoy the day, and try to get someone to make supper for you!

April 16-29
Day 431-445
Well, I'm older, but probably not wiser! We had a house full on Friday to help celebrate the occasion. Glenn stayed up until 12:30 or so, although he was getting pretty droopy eyed. The nicer weather means we can go out more, and that also helps our general disposition.
The boys are pulling out the equipment and we are finding a few flats and dead batteries. The flats have just needed to be pumped up (so far) but the batteries need to be replaced. The farmers around here are starting to roll, but it is pretty cool yet. We have the luxury of waiting a bit longer to start. Glenn was out supervising the boys, and Dale reported that Glenn almost dumped himself out of the chair. Dales comment to Dad was that seat belts save lives! Glenn needs to remember to buckle up when he goes out to tour the grounds.
We have taken advantage of the front deck and the nice weather to do a bit of walking. The railing is a good height, so Glenn gets on his feet and goes along the railing. It is good exercise, and good practice for balance. His right leg still doesn't swing through, but he will keep working on it.
We are being cut back to one day of therapy a week, so that means we will have to do more on our own. I'm of two minds about this, I won't miss the extra day in Regina, but I hope that Glenn won't suffer because of it. The therapists way that it is just a trial, and if they notice a difference we will go back to two days, but I highly doubt that will happen. Home therapy and determination will have to prevail.
The doctor says we are both healthy, otherwise. Glenn's ankles swell up once in a while, but she checked them and said it is because he is sitting and not moving his ankles and feet. That happened in his right hand too, so that makes sense. It does come and go, so I felt relieved about that. Swelling can be a sign of kidney distress, and warfarin can cause kidney trouble, so I thought it best to have her check it out. If he swells up all over, then we may have a problem.
I also took Glenn for a visit to his work place. The people there were very happy to see him, and filled the board room for a visit. I expected a bit more rotation, we went at coffee time, but the whole gang showed up, and had coffee and cookies with us. He was giving some of them a hard time as usual, and they are interested in having him help on the new version. I was happy we made the effort, and I'm sure they were happy to see him too.
As you may be able to tell, we have been super busy. These things have been on the "to -do " list for a while, and it was time to catch up a bit. Funny thing is, my list never seems to get any shorter! We've done the taxes, banking and have started purchasing farm inputs. My bank account is wondering what the heck is going on, but that is the way it goes. I'm a bit grumpy about the tax bill, but managed to whittle it down a fair bit. Next year it won't be so bad, but I may be just setting up to do it again. That will remain to be seen.
I went to see Shirley yesterday too, and she is doing much better in her new home. She moves around more, and has people to be around and interact with. She was so isolated last year, and that is hard for a person with depression. She bottomed out at Christmas, and we moved her in January. The kids really notice a difference in her too, so we did the right thing.
We are getting along day by day, and want to thank you for your continuing support and interest in us, and Glenn's recovery. He is working hard, although he says he's lazy. He sat in the sun and watched the boys work the other day, and thought that was OK. His outlook on life is amazing, and I can only marvel at his courage!

Louise

April 3-15
Day 418-430
I'm preoccupied with books, kids and spring. I don't sit to write things, usually because the computer is busy! I'm at work right now, and it is not too busy at the minute, so I'll try to catch up on the happenings. We need to start visiting with people soon, we are getting into a bit of a rut, but the warm weather will make it more inviting to do that. I forget way too many things, so if you have called and I haven't returned your call, I'm sorry, I probably got distracted, and forgot to do it. It is because of age and stress, and you know... life!
It was really warm here yesterday, and was a pleasure to be about business without the parkas and everything. Today, it is rainy and cold again. It would be nice if it would pour, and really wash things up, but it is drizzling, and not very nice.
Glenn commented that he is noticing that his right hand is working better, he can use it more, and is working on weight bearing on it. It is encouraging to hear him be more positive. He never complains (believe it or not!), but he isn't usually very positive either. I think he is getting to the point where he sees that perhaps he will get mobile. He transfers himself more and more, and on Sunday we were outside at the shop, Dale was changing his tires, and Glenn stood up and had a look under the hood, and suggested that Dale check out the breather. That was good, he is becoming interested in the stuff going on, and because he is home, he can go out and see what is up. His right leg is better (more reliable) too, that makes a difference in his mobility. He pushes a shopping cart (with help of course) in therapy, so he is getting his strength back and his balance is coming too. His warfarin is still wonky, but that is probably because he is eating more than he was. It doesn't take much, so hopefully that will settle down soon. Every day is a bit better right now, so that is all I can ask for. He is still a wise guy, and keeps me on my toes. I know that my birthday will bring on the old lady remarks galore, but I'm not going to complain much yet this year! Maybe next year!

March 26- April 2
Day 411-418
I'm sure spring is around the corner, but it is sure being reluctant ! I went out to make some water run, and it snowed on me! The wind still bites too, so it will be very nice when it gets over 10 degrees. Glenn didn't go out today, but stood at the sink and watched the birds come and go at the feeders. I have quite a variety there, with chickadees, hairy woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, red polls, sparrows, and now the junkos have shown up. Chickadees are bossy little birds, but back off when the big woodpeckers show up. Crows are cawing, but don't come close to the house. I know spring is around the corner!
We continue to carry on, and therapy is back on schedule after the ladies took some time off over the Easter Break. We went to the doctor on Monday, and she was happy with Glenn's progress. She is always surprised, and we are ahead of what the swallow assessment is saying. She was very surprised when I told her Glenn had a hamburger for lunch! She checked his lungs, as that is where any problems will show from aspiration, and she said they are clear. She told Glenn she expects that in a year he will be walking around on his own, and Glenn still shrugged, but it was good to hear her say that. Of course, time will tell, but a positive outlook can't hurt.
My dad had the flu bug and is getting over it. Mom said he needs to get outside now, and get some project going, and that is a good sign. He still has a bit of stomach upset, and his sinuses were infected, so he was feeling pretty glum. The good news is that the hospital ran tests for heart attack and stroke and other things and all came back negative, so he just got the wind knocked out of him by the bug. Not that that is anything to take lightly, after all he is 80!
April is here and with it come another batch of birthdays. My older friend turns older on the 7th, and she loves that I remember that and tell as many people as I can. That is what friends are for, right? We have other friends who turn over another number, and I have to admit that mine is also looming. They come faster and faster. When I was a kid, my birthdays were ages apart, and were over too fast. My, how perspective changes.
Glenn's botox is working well, and his right hand is relaxing more all the time. We got 3 of 4 fingers into his glove last Thursday, and that is the best we've done this winter. It is so much easier to get around in the warmer weather, although the carpet is getting dirty from the wheelchair's tracks through mud. Glenn seems to get stuck in it pretty easily, but it will soon be gone. I knew I needed cement at the bottom of the ramp!
We went out for supper 2 times last week and Glenn had good meals. It is a nice thing to be able to do again, and although he was with family and friends, it was a good start. He was relaxed and so I relaxed. As long as we keep to softer foods, he does well. One thing at a time, but we are doing them!

March 16-25
Day 400-410
Where to start? Glenn is starting to go outside more and will stand beside the railing on the deck and then move along, going to his left. It has been fairly nice on the south side of the house, so we've done that a few times this past week. It snowed a fair bit last night, (the 24th of March) so we will have to wait for it to clear up and warm up again. Jackie is staying with him today, and they had a list of things they were going to do, including income tax. I think it will be good for both of them to have some time together, and it gives Helen a bit of a break. Glenn told me again that I help him too much, and how will he get better if I help too much? I said that he just has to keep telling me to let him try it, it is hard for me to guess what he can or can't do!
I made a turkey on Easter Sunday and had the kids and a few of their in laws for company. It was a busy day, but everyone was glad to be together. What a difference from last year! My dad gave everyone a scare on Sunday. He passed out at the table a couple of times, so they called an ambulance and had him checked out at the hospital. The doctor thinks he was nauseous and passed out because the blood went to his stomach. They did cat scans, and checked for heart attack, and other things. He has a viral infection in his sinuses, and that probably didn't help. Anyway, it got to be a stressful day for everyone, waiting for results. Thankfully he's OK, and they sent him home that night.
I'm going backwards in time. We had our massages on Thursday, and my girl was concerned at the tightness in my lower back. I said I knew it was there. It took me a few days to get over the workout, but feel much better now. I never knew what a difference it could make, but then I have never been under these conditions before.
On the 17th, Glenn had his swallow assessment done, and I think we won't worry about another one, they really told us what we already knew, but the doctor wants to talk to us about it, so we'll see what she has to say. I'm also going to talk to the dietitian again, so perhaps we'll get more guide lines as far as food is concerned, but I figured out a few things myself, and Glenn seems to be doing better. He is on 10 mg of his antidepressant, which is half of the usual dose, and he seems pretty good, although he is still a bit touchy. I think he'll get better with time there too.
I think that is pretty well everything of major importance. Jackie is getting anxious to go dress shopping, so maybe we'll squeeze that in one day. She has the week off from school, so she is looking for things to do to catch up on life. Her timetable is winding down, and she is looking forward to the end and getting back to work. She misses her "fundage". We plan to go out for supper with Glenn's Mom on Wednesday this week so that is another thing on the to do list. She is doing pretty well at her new home, so that was definitely the right move.
We are making plans to get ready for farming this year, for better or worse. I hope all goes well, it is a comfort in a way because we have always done this, so it feels 'normal'. I'm just concerned about the prices on everything, as is every farmer in the province. We'll do what we can.

March 9-15
Day 393-399
Here we are again at the end of another week. We were busy, and had Botox treatment yesterday. I thought I could tell this morning that his leg was a bit more loose, but I don't think it really works that fast! The doctor also injected some into Glenn's right arm to loosen his fingers a bit more. It is a long needle, and I really don't like how he weaves it around once it is inserted, but Glenn says it doesn't hurt as much as the electric shocks do. They have electrodes hooked up to stimulate the muscle that is being injected. It is quite a procedure, and I understand better how Glenn felt when the kids were being born. Sometimes it is easier to be the one doing the work than being the one watching!
The anti-depressant experiment resulted in going back on for a while longer. Glenn was just too emotional, although he wasn't feeling upset, he couldn't control the laughing and crying. We both decided to use it again, and try to go off later. We go for a swallowing assessment on Monday, and then I think we'll wait until after Easter to go back to the doctor. We are both having a massage on Thursday the 20th, and I admit I'm looking forward to it. The past month has been stressful in more than a few ways, so it will be good to get a few kinks worked out!
We are looking forward to a bit of a break over the Easter holidays. It will be important to keep Glenn working his leg, so the Botox keeps working, but we have the know how and equipment now, so that should be OK. The kids are busy with school and jobs, so I haven't really decided what to do for Easter, but it will be something.
Mom had her birthday yesterday, and she and Dad were out and about for the day. They are really doing well, and are in good health. It is good to see. I gave her some roses, and they were going to have cake and coffee, but Glenn and I stayed home, the Botox thing was enough for the day. Elaine and Gordon were here last week-end, and we had supper out with Mom and Dad then. Glenn didn't come to that, but hopefully he will be able to go to other events. We just have to be patient, and take care of the general well being of him. The rest will follow.

March 2-8
Day 386-392
I'm still sort of surprised by how many people are keeping up with us on the blog. I jot down thoughts more as a journaling exercise, but concerned and caring people are faithfully reading what I am putting out there. I hope it isn't too monotonous!
I was just reading the last post, and realize I didn't recount the episode after the sausage day was over. It was a cold wind blowing from the south, and when we got home, I didn't think of that and of how Glenn would react to it. He gets cold easily, so I pulled into the yard, and opened the back of the Rav. The wind blew right into it, and cooled it off rapidly. I got the power chair unloaded, and pulled it up beside Glenn. I couldn't close the back, because the ramps were in the way, so the wind was just a whistling through the truck. I opened Glenn's door, and transferred him to the chair. He was already stiffening up against the cold. We discovered I had forgotten the foot pedal, so I went back for it. I was getting cold too, and when I tried to put the pedal on, I couldn't get it lined up. Now Glenn was showing board like stiffness. When I finally got the @#%@# pedal on, Glenn was almost completely straight and as rigid as could be. I could NOT get his right leg bent at all, and he was only hanging on to the edge of the cushion of the chair. I managed to get him around to the front of the Rav, (slightly out of the wind) and proceeded to yell as I was sure he was going to end up on the ground. I finally bent his left leg a bit, and got him into the chair a bit more, and told him to drive. I didn't know if he would fall out or not, but we proceeded up the ramp. His feet were straight in front of him, and banged on each of the planks as he went up. We got to the front door, and I had forgotten to unlock it, and didn't have the key, so I had to leave Glenn there, and run around to the back door, and through the house to let him in. We made it without any harm done, but I was not happy. After thinking about what had nearly happened, I have a better plan, but I was pretty panicky for a while. The rest of the weekend was fine, and Glenn didn't suffer from the cold snap, but I sure didn't expect that.
We have a fair number of appointments coming up, a swallowing assessment on the 17th, botox on the 14, and the doctor too, although that isn't made yet. Easter is fast approaching, so the therapy sessions are up in the air a bit for Easter week, but they will have it worked out by next week.
We went to Red Lobster on Wednesday for Jackie's birthday supper, and Glenn was able to eat a meal out. It was a pretty big first for him, although he just shrugs and says he's no speed demon, and everyone is done before him. We all tell him it isn't a race, but he feels conspicuous. I hope that doesn't last too long. We have taken him off the anti-depressants, and he is a bit emotional again. If it doesn't settle out soon, we'll put him back on them. His warfarin was off too, so we had him off that off that for a few days. Everything is so balanced, that when you do something out of the ordinary, the meds go wonky. It has been a bit more stressful for me, so I booked us both for massages on the 20th of March.
We've been invited out for supper for my Mom's birthday, and will have to see how Glenn is feeling. He hates to be so emotional when he is out and about, so I told him not to worry, if he doesn't want to go, he can pass for now. Drugs are so amazing, you just don't know until you go off something you've been on for a while, and have to go through the withdrawal. I'm not sure I'll make it!

Day 371-385
Once again 2 weeks have gone since my last post. We are doing well, in spite of the uncertain weather. We had a holiday on family day, and that got us a bit confused because we do have a schedule! Glenn is making advances in the right arm mobility area, his OT is really trying to get it to be more usable, and there is definite improvement. He is eating well enough that we really don't rely on the tube feeding anymore. We've been to the doctor, and are weaning him off the antidepressant, so far all is well. She sent us for a bunch of lab work, so we'll see if he can come off anything else. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.
We celebrated Dale's 23rd last Friday, and are looking forward to Jackie's 21st on the 5th. Mom will be 81 on March 14, and there are a few more in March that we are going to be celebrating. Large families bring lots of birthdays that's for sure! We made sausage yesterday, much to Glenn's dismay. They didn't make him do anything, but it got to be a long day anyway. We stayed until it was smoked and everything. Then I left a bunch of it at Fred and Kris's, so now I have to get it picked up somehow. It was Dale's fault, I was busy getting Glenn settled in the Rav (the power chair fits in the back now!) and didn't double check that everything was loaded. Anyway, we cooked some up for supper, and it passed with flying colours. It will be nice to have on hand for those quick meals we all need to rustle up once in a while.
We have a busy few weeks planned, Glenn goes to see the speech path on Monday, and Botox is scheduled for March 14. We'll probably go back to the doctor sometime in there too, so it should keep us out of trouble. I hope the highways clear up soon, but March can be miserable.

February 10-16
Day 366-370
We have managed to avoid driving in the bad weather conditions, although it has been interesting to drive after the storms are over. Colin hit the ditch last night, he was avoiding 3 deer, and it had rained, so the highway was icy. He didn't damage anything, and he was unharmed, but more than a bit annoyed to end a long day in such a way. Unfortunately, the Rav doesn't have a tow hitch, and the 1/2 ton had a flat tire. I don't think the truck would have pulled him out, he was nose down, at a right angle to the highway. It was fairly steep right there, so I think if he had gone in sideways he would have rolled. Anyway, he got help from someone with a 4x4 this morning, and was on his way back to work. I don't think he was even late!
We had company last night too, and didn't get to bed until 11:30. We were just settling in when Colin called, so my sleep pattern was totally thrown off. I didn't get much sleep, but don't feel too bad yet. Glenn slept well, in spite of the interruptions. He was playing on the PC yesterday, and kept laughing. He downloaded something and was very pleased that it was working. I didn't ask too many questions. He also won an eBay bid so we are waiting for more computer stuff in the mail. I believe it was KVM switch (sorry if that is wrong you computer guys, I do my best!), so now we can hook 4 computers to the same monitor. I'm not sure why we need to do this, but all will be revealed soon.
The botox has pretty well worn off in his right leg, and we are booked in for a review on March 14. We think that is why he was falling, his leg stiffened up, and he had to go back to the way it was behaving before botox. He is more cautious, and is still transferring himself, but has to be more careful of 'setting' his leg before standing on it. We went to the doctor, and are starting to wean off a few meds. She also wrote an order for another swallowing assessment, so we are starting on the way to remove the peg. He had roast beef and potatoes last night, and wondered if he would be eating if he were still in hospital. I said probably not, but who knows? He's waiting for the day he can get out of bed himself instead of waiting for me. I know he would be getting up earlier, and will, because he is an early riser. It is getting closer all the time..
That pretty well covers the excitement for this week. We are well otherwise, and continue to avoid the cold that is going around. We have the sniffles, but it hasn't developed into anything too serious yet.

Feb 2-9
Day 358-365
Hmmm... we're just coming up to a year next Wednesday the 13th and I have 365 days accounted for, I must have miscounted ... go figure. Anyway, it has been almost a year, and my gosh, I hope I don't have another like it for a while. Glenn is getting into the stage where he is trying out his ability, and I am beginning to realize the extra worry this is going to bring to me. He seems to handle these tumbles very well, but we haven't had any really serious consequences yet either. Last Saturday, Helen found him on the floor in the bedroom, he had been trying to change his pants, and wiggled off the bed. She called for help lifting him up, and he was fine. He had spent the 10 minutes he was there picking fuzz from the carpet. Oh dear. Yesterday, he was in the bathroom and decided to clean his chair. He ended up on the floor again, but this time he bumped his stomach peg, and so I was concerned that it may have become dislodged. A few calls later and we were OK, but with a blizzard bearing down on us and a 40 minute drive to the city, it was a bit scary. Again, he seemed to know that it was OK, which kept me phoning for information on how to judge whether or not the peg was working. Our friend works with these all the time and she told me to feed him, and if it worked it was OK. So I hooked him up and away we went, but I am a bit more shaken than I like to think. We're going to the doctor on Thursday, so I hope we can discuss the removal of the peg, Glenn is eating most things quite well, although that can be scary too. He can drink the supplement if he has to, so I hope it can come out. It would be one less thing to worry about.
His statement at the end of yesterday was that he had had a terrible day, but I said, no, we learned that I can pick you up, and we know how to tell if the peg is still in place, so that is not a bad thing. He thinks he will get used to not doing anything, he says he's retired. I'll keep you updated on that frame of mind!
I did get some sewing done in spite of the interruptions. I am determined to finish projects before starting new projects, so that is the end of one project. I have an afghan on the go which I need to finish before I start on a touque for me. Some of the kids are coming for supper, and decided they wanted beans, so I expect I will be making doughballs when I get home ( the spell checker is going nuts, it doesn't know touque or doughballs for heaven sake!)
We went for massage, and I was looking at the list of therapies offered there and they do Reiki therapy too, so I think I'll book Glenn for one of those sessions. Some people have excellent results with it, so I think it's worth a shot.
Dale's birthday is coming up, followed closely by Jackie's ( there's a whole pile of cousins and great cousins in the first part of March too) so we will have cake for them this year (I hope) Happy birthday to Holly on the 4th, Auntie didn't forget, she just doesn't do cards very well! My younger sister is in the Dominican Republic, so she asked that we not have any unfortunate phone calls to make while she is there. Last year she was in Cuba when Glenn had his stroke. I told her we would do our best.
I think that's all for now, we are going along as best we can, and are trying to stay safe and warm in this cold blast of winter. I hope it doesn't last too long!

January 13-February 1
Day 340-357
Yikes, where did the time go? Oh, I know, moved Grandma, 50th birthday, therapy, etc., etc. It's February, and we are closing in on one year since we started this journey. The time dragged and the time flew, and that is how life is. I need to say that Glenn has decided to really get independent, and is trying all sorts of ways to take care of himself. I don't help much with bath-rooming anymore, and we had an OT here on Wednesday to help place a couple more poles to make it easier for Glenn to transfer himself. We are now working on getting into and out of bed, so more and more he is shedding his limitations, and is improving daily. When he tries something new, we have to go over it a few times, and find out what works and what doesn't. He thinks things through, and sometimes even listens to my suggestions! It's great! His speech is getting clearer, and I have to get him to slow down and enunciate , because he is anxious to get the story out.
Grandma is now living in Walsh Acres Manor, and is, so far, happy with the move. Chris really did a good job checking the place out and moving her. She was so alone at the other home, she was going down hill. The new place has 3 other residents right now, and has room for 4 more. It is a newly renovated home, and has a fireplace and closed in deck. One of the other residents also plays organ and piano, so Shirley was having a ball playing again. The caregiver is a journeyman cook, and Chris said the food smelled pretty good! It is a relief to have her there, as I know she wasn't very happy where she was.
I also went to visit Uncle Bob and feel that he knew who I was. He laughed at a few of the remarks I made and was happy to hold my hand while we visited. I asked him where his teeth were, and he opened his mouth. I said they weren't there, and he had a good laugh. I still don't know where his teeth were, but I guess it doesn't matter. He actually said "yes" and "no" to a couple of questions I asked, and he hadn't done that before. I don't think he would have been able to recall may name, but I do think he knew he knew me. That was a bit of a relief, because he really wasn't with it the last time I saw him.
I did go ahead with a party for Glenn, and cooked a turkey and had the kids bring some dips and things. Glenn really enjoyed having people here, and played with a couple of the small ones, who were fascinated with the horn on Uncle Glenn's chair. Chris and Aryn brought their dog, who kept the rabbit on his toes. Ultimately, the rabbit hid out in our bedroom. I don't think he enjoyed the party!
The cold weather this past week gave me a day off. Ray didn't take the truck out on Tuesday, so I got to stay home, and so did Helen. It was miserably cold, so I didn't argue. We didn't go for massage this week, but will go again next week. I have to make a few appointments this morning, but thought I had better catch up on some of the events and happenings around here. I think it will just get busier and busier, as we are perhaps going to put in a few quarters of crop ourselves this spring. Jackie took me to a wedding Expo in Regina, and that kind of brought home that my baby is really getting married next year! Boy, I should start a business, there is a killing to be made with wedding crap. I can't believe how much money people spend on one day! The most useless thing were the chair cover rentals. My gosh, you pay to have chairs covered and decorated with an organza bow! That really floored me. I had no idea. The fashion shows didn't do much for Jackie, who has her heart set on a certain style, but we did get the card of the fellow who designed and made Aryn's dress, so that is a possibility. I told Jackie she will have to start saving her pennies if she goes that route. She continues to do well at school, and is looking forward to getting a job. She is really watching her money right now, and is bothered by not having more "fundage". It is a good lesson in budgeting!
I'm about done, Glenn was looking at trips to the coast online, and I said I wasn't sure about that. He just shrugged and said they were for March, so that goes to show how his thinking has changed. I don't think we'll go, but he is looking forward, and that is the main thing. We still have a spare computer for sale, so if anyone is interested, let us know!

January 6-12
Day 332-339
January has been pretty nice to us so far. We've had a few foggy mornings, and a few flurries of snow, but otherwise the temperature has been in the -10 to -15 area, and that is not bad.
We are back at therapy, and Glenn's physio was pretty thrilled when he transferred himself from his chair to the work out mat by himself! On Thursday, they went for a walk, and she told me that he initialized about ten steps on his right side, which he hasn't done for a while, so she was again very happy with the good sign that that is. I guess taking a Christmas break was a good thing!
Glenn's 50th birthday is on January 18th, and we are wondering what to do to celebrate. I haven't really decided. I'm not sure how much will be appropriate for him right now, as he is still a little reluctant to be in too big a crowd. I guess I will decide soon.
Chris is taking over the moving of Grandma Mitchell. He has gone to look at a carehome in Walsh Acres, and is taking Shirley to see it today. If she likes it, we will move her ASAP. Chris really liked it, and told me he was really going to pump Grandma up into liking it. He probably will succeed. I hope that it works out well. I can cross that off my list then, and go on with the next thing, probably the tax man!
In the meantime, I have an extra computer in my house. Glenn ordered a new one for Dale, and apparently did it twice! Anyone looking for a new computer? It was a very good deal, and I would really like to sell it! Let me know! These things came together on Friday, I filled the Rav with all the online orders. There were 2 computers, 1 LCD monitor (that's for Colin) and a gift basket from Made in Saskatchewan. Donna from the store phoned me and said the door was getting blocked, could I come and pick them up? Oh dear, I'll have to get Glenn to slow down a bit. The old credit card is getting hot!

December 29-January 5
Day 324-331
Happy New Year!
My niece had her baby on December 31, so we are happy for them. All went well we are told, and she had a little girl.
I had a few sleepless nights trying to figure out the farm plan for next year. I'm keeping my options as open as possible. I bought some fertilizer, and we'll see what develops.
Glenn's mom needs to move, so I had her assessed. They say she isn't ready for a home, so we will have to find another personal care home. There are quite a few to choose from, but I don't know when I'll get around to it We had a nice week at home, so I am just being lazy, and really didn't miss the city at all. Therapy starts again on Monday, so I might find some ambition then.
It's been pretty quiet, so I really don't have much to say. I worked a couple days this week, but otherwise have just been on Christmas break. We are OK and take the days as they come. I try to keep Glenn working on new things, and he is eating more all the time. I hope that he continues to improve, although he has grave misgivings about his future. I try to encourage him as much as I can, but who really knows?
